Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that disrupts breathing during sleep, causing loud snoring, poor rest, and serious health risks such as heart disease, diabetes, and memory problems. Now, new research suggests that eating cheese could help lower the risk of developing this condition.
A study published in the journal Sleep Medicine explored the connection between cheese consumption and sleep apnea by analyzing data from the UK Biobank and FinnGen Biobank. This research used a method called Mendelian randomization (MR), which examines genetic data to better understand how one factor, like diet, might influence another, like disease risk.
What did the study Find?
The researchers discovered that people who ate more cheese had a significantly lower chance of developing sleep apnea—a 28% reduction in risk, to be exact. In addition, cheese consumption influenced 23 biomarkers, which are molecules in the body that indicate different health conditions.
Researchers identified six key biomarkers as particularly important in this relationship.
Aspartate Aminotransferase: Linked to liver health, cheese consumption slightly elevated this enzyme, suggesting potential metabolic benefits.
Urea: A marker of kidney function and protein metabolism, which can reflect better overall metabolic health.
Cystatin C: Related to kidney health and inflammation.
Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG): Influences hormones that can affect sleep and metabolism.
Testosterone: Known to affect energy, muscle health, and sleep patterns.
Diastolic Blood Pressure: Lower blood pressure often improves cardiovascular and sleep health.
These biomarkers suggest that eating cheese may improve metabolic and cardiovascular health, both of which are tied to a lower risk of sleep apnea.
What Does this Mean for You?
This study shows a connection between eating cheese and a reduced risk of sleep apnea, but it’s important to remember that this doesn’t mean cheese alone can prevent or treat the condition. Experts recommend consuming cheese in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Nutrient-rich options—like Snowville Creamery’s No Lac Jack, No Lac Pepper Jack, or White Cheddar—are great choices.
If you’re concerned about sleep apnea, maintaining a healthy weight, improving your sleep habits, and consulting with a doctor are still the most effective ways to manage your risk.
